Faux Fireplace Mantels
5 Jul 2007
These days, you can have a mantel that looks like the real thing at only a fraction of what the real thing costs. Faux fireplace mantels are so close to real in terms of design and material used, that usually only a trained professional will be able to discern what's real and what's not.
Scientists today have come up with prefabricated materials for mantels using advanced technologies. If granite, limestone or slate for example is what you like, then cast stone is a perfect choice at a much lower cost.
If a mantel that looks like wood is the choice for you, there are some companies who manufacture faux wood mantels that are painted or lacquered and are available for under $100 at building supply outlets such as Lowes and Home Depot.
Faux fireplace mantels come in designs ranging from simple to elaborate, complete with columns, pilasters and finials. There are prefabricated mantels of every type, you can find single-faced, double-sided and corner fireplaces, and many are adjustable to fit your design needs.
Also available are mantel kits which are available at local hardware stores and building supply centers. Reasonably inexpensive, these kits often include a shelf, legs, and mounting hardware. Usually these kits will allow for adjustments, so consider the option of extending the height and width of your mantel and adding decorative fireplace tiles or faux marble in the area between the mantel and the fireplace opening.
When shopping for a mantel, always be sure to choose a mantel that compliments the overall room design and select a mantel that will either blend in or enhance your space.
