Real antique wood stoves are typically only decorative although some still can be used for heating and cooking. Many antique stores sell antique wood stoves as they can be collector's items that are very valuable to some people. They make a great impact in old restored homes, B&B's and hotels.
Thousands of different types of wood stoves have been manufactured, many are still around as antiques. Four of the most popular types are Victorian, pot bellied and kitchen cook stoves as well as the Franklin Stove invented by Ben Franklin.
Victorian wood stoves are made of cast iron and many feature a wood-burning oven. As they were often used for cooking, they were usually kept in the kitchen. They are usually fairly large and rectangular; most have shelves or ledges above the stove that are used for storage or to keep food warm . Victorian wood stoves are often decorated elaborately, with silver or gold inlays complimenting the iron body.
Pot belly wood stoves are a short, squatty, small stove, with barrel-shaped body. Many pot belly stoves have a round oven in the center of the stove body. These stoves are usually black with fairly plain looks, but some are still decorated with engravings or designs.
Many antique wood stoves are still work. People today often still use these stoves to cook food or heat their homes. Until the 1970's, the basic design of most types of wood stoves did not change much over the previous century.
Real antique wood stoves can be very valuable as they are getting rarer and harder to find, making them a collector's item. Many are still functional and they can add authenticity to restored homes and hotels.
