I have a direct vented gas fireplace installed in my new house. I was wondering why do i need a surround? Is it just for beauty of there is some utility for using a surround?
Can I just put a hearth and mantle?

Typically the surround (on the walls) is just for aesthetics. Often it's just there to fill in the space between the fireplace and the mantle.

Looking for anyone who has replaced gas log set with firepalace glass (aquatic glassel, fire&ice, etc.).

The marble(?) surround is there for looks, but it also serves as a non-combustable buffer above your fireplace that is mandatory by most codes and manufacturers.
