We recently purchased a home built in the early 60's with a woodburning fireplace.I felt a lot of cold air coming from the fireplace when it was not in use the other nite.Upon inspecting I noticed a very large gap when the damper was closed. Also the damper lever was broke from the damper itself. There was a large rusted out or burnt out piece about 1" x 8" wide on the damper too.I really don't want to replace the mantle or the stones around it,what are my options?

Install what is called a "Direct Connect". It is basically a pipe, usually stainless steel, that connects to the flue outlet on the stove and runs up through the damper outlet, through the smoke chamber and into the actual chimney several feet. There is a seal made, usually in the damper outlet that prevents leakage around the pipe.

OR... install a complete chimney liner which is the same as a Direct Connect except the pipe extends to the top of the chimney.
