I have a 44 Elite Xtrordinair wood burning fireplace that is 10 years old. The firebox is set into a normal looking brick/rock hearth with a chimney approximately 35 feet in height. My local licensed plumber can see no problems in converting this to a vented gas log fireplace. I understand in this day of lawsuits that the company will not approve this conversion. I live in the country and I'm not aware of this conversion requiring any permits other than a licensed plumber. My question is one of safety. What is the safety issue of making this conversion? It will not be on without the damper open and will not be used for heat but for looks. Any advice will be helpful.
Thanks

You can probably technically do it. Usually any fireplace that can burn wood, can be converted to burn gas logs.

Where you "can" have a problem is; if you ever had a house fire because of it, your homeowners insurance company "could" deny the claim as you altered the appliance.

I would call Travis Industries (in Washington state) who made the unit, and ask them their opinion.
