We have a fireplace that is just the basic hole in the wall surrounded by brick, no fan or vent...nothing of that nature. Just a chimney that goes straight up. Just recently we bought a chimney cover because the people that had the house before us just blocked up the fireplace and put a metal slab over the top of the chimney. The chimney cover is about 8" x 8", and the top of the chimney is WAY bigger than that. But my boyfriend did the best he could to make it work. We lit a fire tonight, a pre-test before christmas, it went well for about 15-20 minutes and then the smoke started backing up into the house. Not terrible and thick, but it was noticable after a while. Is the chimney cover causing this because it is too small? Or is there a trick we can do to make it stop backing up? More air on the fire...an indian chant...what?
Thank you for your time.
