Properly and SAFELY insulating around prefab

larry 1 post Dec 04, 2009 4:41 PM	We are remodeling our family room and part of that is to put drywall and insulation in and around this unit. We have a double lined flu going up and is surrounded by a wood and sided “chimney" from the outside. The entire room is an addition. The area of the outset for the flu going up is not insulated, so it was previously insulated across the inside of the wall on the front (above and sides) of the unit. Sorry for the backfill. My question is this. What kind of insulation should be used to insulate around the firebox, both on the sides, behind if proper, and above all the way to the ceiling on the interior wall of the fireplace? We want to make sure no cold air can leak or transfer cold through the wall so good insulation is a must. And how close can this proper insulation be to the firebox and flu? I can provide photos if that would help get a proper answer. We really want to insulate well from the cold getting in, but I do not want a fire hazard. Thanks for any help. Larry
