Hello,
I am rehabing an old lake house. The fireplace has been out of commission for at least 40 years, but was used at one point. My question is, there are 4 12"x12" "cubby holes" or Vent-like recesses on the interior face of the fireplace. They are lined with metal, which reminds me of a flue. The recesses are located on both upper corners and both lower corners of the face of fireplace. What are these for? They seem to me like they would be a vent for heat to escape, only, i am worried about smoke escaping. Should block these in while renovating the fireplace? If so, how should i do so?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,
Tyler.
